Information is provided below on getting to Ireland by air or ferry; travel within Ireland by bus or train; travel within Limerick City by taxi; and the national Transport For Ireland Journey Planner.
By Air
It is recommended to allow at least 2 hours to get through the airports listed below, and at least 3 hours for long-haul flights. This applies both on your arrival and when you depart.
Shannon Airport
Shannon Airport is the closest airport to Limerick City (approximately 25km), and is connected to over 30 destinations across the UK (London, Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham), Europe (including Portugal, Spain, France, and Italy) and the US (JFK New York, Newark, Chicago and Boston). Note that Shannon Airport offers full US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) preclearance facilities to airlines travelling to the US.
There are a variety of frequent bus routes connecting Shannon Airport to Limerick City Bus Station, in particular the Bus Eireann Route 343 and the Expressway Route 51. Alternatively, one may consider the Shannon Airport Cab / Taxi.
Dublin Airport
Dublin Airport is Ireland’s main international airport. Although further away from Limerick City than Shannon Airport at approximately 200km, we anticipate that many delegates will arrive through Dublin Airport due to its greater flight connectivity.
Dublin Airport has many frequent bus routes connecting to Limerick City. It is important to book a seat in advance to guarantee a place. The main bus routes are as follows.
-
The CityLink Route 712X offers a direct non-stop route to Limerick, taking only 2hrs30mins. Note that it first stops in Castletroy, Limerick, before arriving in Arthur’s Quay, Limerick City (and it is this latter stop where you will want to get off).
-
The Flightlink Route 723 also offers a direct non-stop route to Limerick City that mirrors the CityLink Route 712X described above.
- Dublin Coach / Big Green Bus provides frequent 24hr services to Limerick City. This option requires a route changeover: first, you take the 726:N7 Service from Dublin Airport to the Red Cow Luas stop, and then you change over to the 300:M7 Express Service to Arthur’s Quay, Limerick City. The journey takes about 3hrs in total.
Dublin Airport does not have a train station. However, you may wish to make your way into Dublin City (by Dublin Bus or taxi) and then take the train to Limerick City. The journey is from Dublin Heuston Rail Station to Limerick Colbert Station and takes 2hrs (but allow 40mins to get from Dublin Airport to Dublin Heuston). Some train routes to Limerick require a change in Limerick Junction (and note that Limerick Junction is not in Limerick). For details, see the Irish Rail website.
Cork Airport
Cork Airport is another airport worth considering that is approximately 100km from Limerick City. In terms of international connectivity, it lies between the smaller Shannon Airport and the larger Dublin Airport.
The CityLink Route 251 offers a frequent service between Cork Airport and Henry Street, Limerick City that takes approximately 2hrs.
By Ferry
Ireland has three ferry ports as follows.
- Dublin Ferryport. Sailings from the United Kingdom (Holyhead) and France (Cherbourg). Dublin Port is on the outskirts of Dublin City, which is accessible by bus or taxi, and onwards to Limerick City by bus or train.
- Rosslare Europort. Sailings from the United Kingdom (Fishguard and Pembroke), France (Cherbourg, Roscoff, and Dunkirk), and Spain (Bilbao and Santander). Access to Limerick City is by bus from Wexford City or train via Dublin City.
- Port of Cork Ringaskiddy. Sailings from the France (Roscoff). Access to Limerick City is via Cork City by bus or train. You first need to travel to Cork City either by taxi or the Bus Eireann Route 223 bus from Ringaskiddy Village. Further information can be found here. Note that the Port of Cork also includes Cobh Port, which is different from Ringaskiddy and separated by water (but connected via a regular ferry).
For further details, and to book ferry tickets, see the following ferry operators: Irish Ferries, Stena Line, Brittany Ferries, and DFDS.
One route that might be particularly straightforward for delegates is: (i) take the Eurostar train from Europe to London St Pancras Station, (ii) transfer on foot or London Underground to London Euston Station, (iii) use a “SailRail” ticket that covers the journey from London Euston to Dublin Ferryport, which you can book via trainline. This is a train journey to Holyhead and a ferry journey thereafter. The SailRail ticket is very competitively priced compared to booking the train and ferry separately.
By Bus
Bus Eireann is Ireland’s national bus service with a network of services all across Ireland. Various other bus services connect to the airports around Ireland as mentioned above.
By Train
Limerick is served with excellent rail links, with frequent services from Dublin, Cork, and Galway. For further information and ticketing see Irish Rail, which is Ireland’s national rail service.
When travelling to Limerick City by train, the important thing to note is that the train station is Limerick Colbert Station and not Limerick Junction (which is not in Limerick!). However, there are regular trains between Colbert Station and Limerick Junction, and many train routes to Colbert Station (e.g., from Dublin or Cork) require a changeover at Limerick Junction.
By Taxi
Local taxis around Limerick City are available from Swift Taxis Limerick, Limerick City Taxis, and FreeNow. See also the list on Limerick.ie.
Journey Planner
Transport For Ireland (TFI) offers a range of helpful features (including a Journey Planner and a TFI Live Departures App). This is a very useful service that has been developed by Ireland’s National Transport Authority.
